Oral Appliance Therapy

A woman sleeping with cpap machineOral appliances are used to treat snoring and sleep apnea. It involves wearing a removable oral appliance over the mouth while sleeping. By wearing the oral appliance, the patient’s airway is held open. This can be achieved by either holding the tongue with the device or by supporting the jaw in a forward position.

Oral appliances are worn only during sleep, and they fit just like an orthodontic retainer. Although relatively simple, oral appliance therapy is an effective treatment option for snoring and sleep apnea.

If we decide an oral appliance is the best treatment option for you, we will begin the process of crafting you a personalized oral appliance. If you want a customized oral appliance that suits you perfectly, our great team here at Jason Widner DMD Family Dentistry can help.

What Is Oral Appliance Therapy?

This is a practical, non-invasive treatment that yields results. Patients are more appreciative of oral appliance therapy due to its comfort, quietness, portability, ease of maintenance, ease of wear, and travel convenience.

How Can We Help On Your First Visit?

We work closely with our patients to treat snoring and sleep apnea. During your first visit, we will talk with you concerning the benefits of treatment. You will also receive information concerning the potential side effects of oral appliance therapy and related costs from our experts.

Once this is done, we will conduct a complete clinical evaluation, which includes examining the patient's teeth, jaw, tongue, and airway. We would then obtain a new x-ray of your mouth.

Making and Fitting Your Oral Appliance

Oral appliances are personalized. They are made utilizing physical and digital impressions and prototypes of your teeth. The information gathered from these impressions is utilized to design and produce your oral appliance.

A follow-up appointment for the final fitting in our dental office will be scheduled. We would then modify the appliance to optimize its comfortability and efficiency. One of our team members will show you how to properly clean and maintain the appliance. After this fitting, our sleep doctor can schedule a sleep study to confirm your treatment's effectiveness to provide additional information and guidance to optimize your sleep experience.

Follow Up Visits

Regular follow-up appointments with our dentist are essential to ensure the best fit of the oral appliance. Efficient oral appliances are often personalized and calibrated over time to ensure optimum effectiveness. These routine appointments are a significant part of the long-term progress for your snoring or sleep apnea treatment.

Living With Oral Appliance Therapy

When patients go forward with the treatment for their snoring and sleep apnea, their quality of life is greatly improved. Using the oral appliance as instructed will help you get more restful sleep and improve your other symptoms.
