I Broke My Front Tooth. What Are My Options for Tooth Replacement?
Posted on 7/15/2024 by Jason Widner DMD Family Dentistry
Up to 80 percent of adults will crack or break a tooth at some point in their adult lives. What happens if you happen to break a front tooth? You will want to get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
What Happens When You Break a Tooth?
Your teeth are some of the hardest objects in your body, but that does not mean you cannot break them. Like the bones in your body, your teeth can take a lot of punishment, but it is possible to fracture or break a tooth. Every broken tooth is different. You may crack or fracture your tooth, but your tooth remains intact. A broken tooth usually means a piece of your tooth has broken off completely. If you broke your tooth, you may experience swelling, bleeding, and pain depending on the severity of the injury.
Fixing a Broken Tooth
If you have broken your tooth at the gumline, you may want to think about dental implants. Implants are replacement teeth that anchor in your jawbone. Our dentist will first want to remove any remnants of your broken tooth. Then, they will implant an implant screw through your gum tissue and into your jawbone. After the incision heals, dentists will place an abutment to connect a prosthetic tooth and, later, the tooth itself. Implants are a great solution to a severely broken tooth, especially a broken front tooth.
What if your tooth is chipped or cracked? If the chips or cracks are small, you may be able to get a crown or bonding. Bonding is a form of liquid plastic that dentists can harden with a special light. The bonding is the same color as your natural teeth, so our dentist can seamlessly blend the repair of your tooth. Crowns are porcelain caps that cover the tooth fully so that your remaining tooth portion is protected.
